Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Award for the History of Science/Humanities and Universities 2019

We welcome theses within the fields of the history of science/humanities and the history of universities in the broadest sense. The award consists of €750. In addition, the laureate will be offered assistance to rework the thesis into an article, should the winner like to publish it in an academic journal.

In 2013, Gewina created the Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Award for the History of Science/Humanities and Universities. It will be awarded for the third time during the eighth Gewina Woudschoten Conference on June 21 and 22, 2019 in Zeist, the Netherlands. 

Submissions

We welcome theses within the fields of the history of science/humanities and the history of universities in the broadest sense. These must have been produced by students between August 31, 2015 and August 31, 2018 in completion of a Master's degree at a Dutch or Belgian university. A thesis may be submitted in Dutch, French or English.  

Submission deadline is December 31, 2018. Please send the thesis anonymized to s.c.j.r.broere@uva.nl. Mention “Thesis award 2019” in the heading and the author’s name and completed academic program in the email. 

The jury consists of:

  • dr. Hieke Huistra (Utrecht University)
  • dr. Djoeke van Netten (University of Amsterdam)
  • dr. Jetze Touber (Ghent University)
  • prof. dr. Geert Vanpaemel (KU Leuven)

The Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Award for the History of Science/Humanities and Universities is co-sponsored by the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities and the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands.
